For those who don't already know, Zoe and I have been here for just over two months. The crazy thing is, we came to China smack dab in the middle of this glorious recession. Times are hard for a lot of people financially it's even worse than The Great Depression; foreclosures, poor stock markets, and the most obvious, the depressing job market. I can't count how many times we've heard about 'a rough market' and we were warned not to go back. But we did it anyway, in hopes that if we can find something, almost anything, during these tumultuous times, we'll do well when times get better. (And they WILL get better).
Zoe managed to do the impossible. Within 2 weeks of our arrival to the US, Zoe landed a decent part-time tutoring job with a bank executive. Almost days after that, she found more tutoring jobs (one from my relatives Kenny and Glenna for their son Cinque who is learning Chinese at Dalton. Thank you!) Zoe landed another part-time job working long 6 hour days on Saturdays in an immigrant Chinese neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. She taught and taught and taught and spent much of her blood, sweat and tears finding more opportunities as a Chinese language interpreter.
It was Zoe's hard work, jumping on awesome opportunities and never-ending energy in her four to five part-time jobs over the last two months that paid the rent and put food on the table for the both of us. I have been blessed recently to find a good offer, but there is no way I could have done it without you. Thank you, Zoe, for helping us get our life started here in America.
YMCA, here I come!
